Ophilia finally proved how much of a bad ass she is in her final confrontation. The best and most challenging boss battle. Even in the final chapters (specifically Ophilia’s wonderful final boss), I found myself learning new things about my characters and discovering novel ways to turn the tide in battle. When everything is clicking, it’s almost like you’re planning a well-choreographed dance to knock your opponent down and deliver massive damage.

Exploiting an opponent’s weakness and earning “Untouchable” or “Domination” scores after fights remains exhilarating throughout. While Octopath borrows heavily from the classics, it makes sure it stands out with a fantastic battle system that far exceeds the mindless button pressing of the games of yesteryear. The Battle System Given the theater setting, I was kind of hoping this would turn into a dance-off. This is definitely a game to play with either good speakers or a set of headphones to fully lose yourself in. Octopath might just set a new high bar for music as each of the eight characters has an instrument dedicated to them, and every story transition/battle flows perfectly with the melody. I still catch myself humming the victory music from Final Fantasy VII and Persona 5 from time to time. JRPGs have been known to have some of the best in-game music there is.

The main problem is that it could have easily been an all-time great game had it tried just a little bit harder. It’s enjoyable throughout and a solid 8.5/10 or so if you were to grade it. As far as scratching that classic JRPG itch, Octopath certainly does that. Looking back on my time immersed in this stylish 16-bit throwback adventure, I find there’s both plenty to love and a lot to be frustrated about. Head out to Western Wellspring Sands when ready. Finally, after a mere 59 hours and 32 chapters, my main journey in Octopath Traveler has come to an end. A couple of the NPCs in the house he's guarding have hidden item locations to provide, and some interesting items to Purchase / Steal.Īfter talking to some NPCs around town, you'll be tasked with meeting up with Bale to fight some Lizardmen. He has around 33k HP, so it's not an insurmountable battle. If you get blinded, simply use Rehabilitate. Come into the battle with plenty of Healing Grapes (M) and Inspiriting Plums (M), and just use Thousand Spears to break him and fully charged Brand's Thunder to deal the bulk of the damage. You should also be able to Challenge and defeat the guard in front of the house on the north side of the oasis (the house just west of the tavern), particularly if you have apothecary Olberic. Side note: observant players using a checklist may notice that we still have one more hidden item here, but it will have to wait until WAY after the Chapter 4s are done.

You won't be able to get this after completing Olberic's Chapter 4 (which gives you a pretty big window of opportunity), but it's still missable so grab it now! Once you begin Olberic's Chapter 3, you can Inquire / Scrutinize Bale, who is in the guardhouse on the west end of town, for a hidden item.
